The Flower of Neglect is a solo vibraphone piece that paraphrases the melody of ‘Wildwood Flower’ by the Carter Family . The piece draws heavy inspiration from impressionist piano works and explores the vibraphone’s ability to create shimmering washes of tonal colour. The original song is quite joyful despite it’s melancholic lyrics - as if this joy is a facade to hold face in heartbreak. In this piece, that facade is stripped away , exploring the quiet melancholy that lies beneath. The piece’s title is derrived from the song’s final lyrics.
